Social programme

7PM at Galatheakroen. We are all familiar with Italian, Chinese, Indian, Japanese etc. cuisine, but Danish? For this dinner you will get what for centuries has been the national dish. You need to pre-order if you have the courage to try this meal (look at the registration page for details), but after 8PM you can just show up for a drink. The menu? Bøf med løg!

Pre-conference dinner: September 24th

All too frequently people who attend conferences scatter in all directions after a day’s sessions. So we’ve decided to try to avoid that and give you a chance to discuss the papers of the day over a beer in the foyer right outside the conference hall.

The bar opens after the last paper.

After session bar: September 25th

No after session bar this day - there just isn’t time. After the final paper we all walk to Nyhavn (30 min - taxis can be arranged but at your own expense) and at 6 PM sail for the late 19th century Middelgrunden fort, This is where the conference dinner is taking place. Look at the Registration page for price details.

Once there, over a drink we will get a brief introduction to the fortifications of Copenhagen and the role of the Middelgrunden fort by leading Danish fortification expert Svend Erik Abrethsen.

The dinner is a three course meal with wine ad libitum. The Danish Heritage Agency is happy to sponsor the meal, so the dinner cost is for the voyage and the wine only.

The boat leaves for Nyhavn at 10.30 PM with arrival at Nyhavn c. 40 min later. Please note that there are no alternatives to this boat: If you miss it you are Robinson Crusoe.

Conference dinner: September 26th

First port of call on the excursion is the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, where we will be divided into two groups. One takes a tour of the museum and the others go sailing on Roskilde Fjord in copies of Viking vessels. After the tour/cruise the two groups switch places.

The museum is built right where the vessels were found (excavation pic here). All photos copyright The Viking Ship Museum.

September can be quite cold, rainy and windy in Denmark, so remember that when you pack your suitcase. You will probably not enjoy the rest of the excursion if you are cold and your clothes are wet. Life wests will be provided.

Lunch (included) takes place at Snekken, the museum’s restaurant .

After lunch we visit the Lejre area with Tom Crhistensen, curator of Roskilde Museum, as our guide. More details to follow.

The day finishes at the Lejre research Centre

For those travelling home by train, the bus stops on the way back at the railway station in Roskilde c. 6.15 PM.
